English Speaking Walking Tour – The Tales from Pantjoran (Chinatown) – 09 February 2024 – CNY’s eve

The history of Jakarta’s Chinatown dates back to the Dutch East India Company’s rule over the archipelago. During that time, the Company designated a specific area for the Chinese community to reside, keeping them outside the city walls of Batavia (the city’s old name during Dutch occupation) after a racial riot in 1740.

We will visit various sites that bear witness to the existence of the old Chinese community, showcasing a culture that remains robust to this day. Explore the oldest Chinese temple in Jakarta, established since 1650, and a Peranakan “mansion” that provides insight into their way of life. The community has been an integral part of Batavia for centuries, and their culture has seamlessly integrated with Indonesian customs. We can find a lot of examples in language, architecture, and cuisine.

Therefore, let us explore the historical Jakarta’s Chinatown with Walk Indies on the Lunar New Year’s eve! Reserve now via www.walkindies.com or link on our Instagram’s profile.
