English Walking Tour – The World War Memorials – February 7th 2026

Announcement : If you looking for the same tour in Bahasa Indonesia, please click here, thank you.

Jakarta is home to a significant historical landmark: the Menteng Pulo cemetery complex. This site comprises two distinct commemorative grounds. The first is the Dutch Honorary Cemetery, known as Ereveld Menteng Pulo, and the second is the Jakarta War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

Inaugurated in 1949, Ereveld Menteng Pulo serves as the final resting place for approximately 4,300 individuals, including both military personnel and civilians who perished during World War II. The interred represent a diverse range of ethnicities and faiths, including Indonesians who served within the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL).

At the heart of the cemetery stands a multi-religious foundation, intended as a space for reflection and remembrance for all victims of the conflict. Additionally, the site houses a columbarium containing the remains of 754 prisoners of war who died in captivity during the Japanese occupation.

Adjacent to the Dutch grounds, the Jakarta War Cemetery commemorates over 1,100 soldiers from the British Commonwealth. Notably, the cemetery honors the service of 304 personnel from India and Pakistan who fought under the British flag.

Among the notable figures interred here is Brigadier General Mallaby, who was killed in Surabaya in October 1945; his remains were subsequently transferred to this location. The site’s international significance was further highlighted in 2008 during a formal visit by the then-Prince of Wales, now King Charles III.

These meticulously maintained grounds offer a solemn narrative of the Pacific War and the profound human suffering it caused. By visiting these sites, we are invited to reflect on the lessons of history and the enduring importance of diplomacy over conflict.
