The name “Kemajoran” first appeared in 1816 in the Java Government Gazette advertisement as “land located near Weltevreden”. It was the rank of a VOC official from France, Isaac de l’Ostale de Saint-Martin (1629–1696) who is believed to be the origin of the name Kemayoran. He is said to have owned a very large land in the area, so famous that he was known by the locals as Mayor. From that nickname, it is said that the pronunciation evolved from “Mayoran” to “Kemayoran”.
.
Did you know that in Kemajoran there used to be an airport? Kemajoran (with the IATA code KMO) was the first international and commercial airport of Indonesia (operating in 1940). Having two long runways that intersect each other, now we know the two runways as Jalan Benyamin Sueb and Jalan HBR Motik.
.
Although it is no longer operational, there is quite a lot of interesting history that can still be seen in the Kemayoran area, one of which is the air control tower that is a silent witness to the transit of “iron birds” from abroad in its time. As well as traces of valuable heritage in the form of reliefs by Indonesian artists located in the VIP room of the airport which was once used by President Soekarno to welcome state guests. We will also visit the ATC Tower that appeared in Tin-Tin’s adventure comic “Flight 714 to Sydney”.
.
In addition, we will also pass several interesting buildings in the Kemayoran area including the old Taman Siswa school building. Let’s walk with us, explore while listening to stories of Kemayoran’s glory. Reservation via www.walkindies.com
