In the 17th century, Batavia’s Western Warehouses — written in Dutch as Westzijdsche Pakhuizen — stored the world’s most precious commodity: spices, waiting to be shipped across the seas. Built in 1652, this complex once consisted of four grand warehouses. Today, three are preserved as the Maritime Museum, while the fourth stands quietly near Batavia’s old northern wall.
On this journey, Walk Indies invites you to experience Kalibesar and the former spice warehouse at dusk. Our walk begins from the former headquarter of a powerful colonial conglomerate, before strolling by the riverside to the former VOC Shipyard — where ships once docked to be repaired. Here, there is a replica of the old Amsterdam Gate which is the grand entrance to the Batavia Castle from the City Hall (now : Fatahillah Square).
We continue to walk along the rear of the Western Warehouses to explore the Batavia’s northern wall and the fourth spice warehouse, while seeing the view of Luar Batang Village across the water.
As night falls, the Maritime Museum reveals a new charm. From its courtyard, the twinkling lights of ships in Sunda Kelapa shimmer against the skyline of North Jakarta. Along the way, we uncover the story of Europe’s great voyages in search of the fabled Spice Islands — the discovery that reshaped the world.
Reservations are available via the link in our profile bio or through the WALK INDIES website. See you on the adventure!
