English Walking Tour – The World War Memorials – October 4th, 2025

Did you know there is a war cemetery complex in Jakarta, located in Menteng Pulo? There are two cemeteries next to each other. The first one is the Dutch Honorary Cemetery, also called Ereveld. The second one is the Jakarta War Cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Ereveld Menteng Pulo is the final resting place for people who died in World War II, both civilians and soldiers. Some of them were Indonesians who served in the Dutch army (KNIL). This cemetery opened in 1949, and it has 4,300 graves of people from different religions and races. In the middle of the cemetery, there is a multi-religious church used to remember those who died in the war. There is also a columbarium, which is a place to keep the ashes of 754 prisoners of war who died under Japanese rule.

The Jakarta War Cemetery has more than 1,100 graves of soldiers from the British Commonwealth, including many from Pakistan and India (304 graves), who were part of the British army. One of the graves is of Brigadier General Mallaby, who died in Surabaya in October 1945. His body was later moved to this cemetery in Jakarta. King Charles III (who was Prince Charles at the time) visited this cemetery during his trip to Jakarta in 2008.

These quiet and green places tell stories about the Pacific War and the suffering during the war. Visiting these cemeteries helps us learn from the past, so we understand that war is not the answer to solving problems.
